Really terrific old hand crafted domed utility, heirloom or other box. Based on nails & other elements of box this most likely dates to early 1800's & possibly even earlier. Lots of rectangular & square nails & some brad nails without heads at all. Lots of powder post beetle holes & other aged wear. Terrific for display piece with primitives, quilts & other.

It appears there was a locking mechanism at one time, but it may have been added after box's original use, as with the handle on top. I think the top handle may have been added in 1850's-1880 based on design features.

The domed lid is separated from the top of box but still fits well. It looks to have had some hinges at one time & there is a crack in dome as shown in pictures. This is a great display quality item despite its heavy wear & tear.  Please review all pictures as they describe the box better than words. You can zoom in for a detailed look.  There are some thin wood slat strips on the bottom of chest & some parts of those have worn away & the ones on either end are missing.

Not sure what this beauty was used for. The inside of box is not stained with oil as would be expected for a work or tool carrier. But, it has an area where it was slightly burned.  It could have been a craftsman box, small blanket box, heirloom storage or other. Most likely it had multiple uses in 150-200 years.
