Map of North America.
Showing Its Political Divisions,
and Recent Discoveries in the Polar Regions

(United States / Canada / Mexico / Central America / Caribbean / etc.)

Issued Philadelphia, 1860 by S.A. Mitchell.

Interesting antique engraved and lithographed map with original hand color. These earliest era Mitchell maps are less common than one might believe. The 1860 atlas itself is now very scarce, any examples of this map in such clean bright condition certainly being in the minority of those few potentially available at any given moment.

From a modern historical perspective, this map displays a number pre-Civil War geographical curiosities, including: Alaska as "Russian America"; Greenland as "Danish America"; Canada as "British America"; etc.

Floral & grape cluster vine border richly printed indicating an early state. The almost acidic vivid yellow, green & red colors are utterly unique to Mitchell maps hand colored during a brief historical era.

Lovely appearance, nice age patina, trivial age toning or insignificant stains, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive.

Sheet measures c. 15 1/4" x 12 1/2".

Engraved area measures c. 13" x 10 1/2".
